Joe Crowley Student Union, University of Nevada-Reno

The new student union at the University of Nevada – Reno set a new campus standard for the design and construction of student union facilities. A large atrium, exterior sunshades and interior light shelves were developed through extensive daylight modeling. Minimal amounts of electric lighting were needed in public spaces daytime hours which helped the project achieve the environmental and energy goals set forth by the university. The Ballroom was located on the upper floor so that skylights could be used to bring natural light to a variety of events. The daylight was carefully integrated with the electric lighting and control systems to conserve energy and reduce maintenance.
